We are looking forward to a great year at McCulloch Junior High School. We hope all of you are too!

Here's a roundup of some frequently asked questions this time of year: 

When is the first day of school?
The first day of the 2016-17 school year is Tuesday, Aug. 9.

When can students come in to find their locker, classrooms, etc.?
Students (and their families) are welcome to visit the building during the open hours below, to find their locker and their classrooms, and just generally get ready to be here and engaged once classes start!

Open hours are as follows:
  • Wednesday, Aug. 3, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 4, 1 to 4 p.m.
We are still working on plans for a more formal open house event.

Are uniforms required?
Marion Community Schools does not require uniforms. We do have dress code guidelines. Click here to view them. Each building's principal is responsible for determining the best way to oversee dress code in their building. If you have questions regarding McCulloch dress code, please contact our school office,  674-6917.

What school supplies do students need?
We do not have specific requested supplies for junior high students. In general, writing materials are universally needed for taking notes and completing assignments. Individual classes may require other specific supplies or equipment. Teachers will provide more information as-needed. (School supplies for grades P-6 can be viewed here.)

How much are school fees?
School fees vary depending on what classes your student is taking. A $50 deposit is required at registration time, and the remainder will be billed to you in the fall. How can students get involved in McCulloch athletic teams and extracurricular activities?
The McCulloch football team has provided information here. Information about other activities and teams will be provided to students as available. If you have questions about a specific activity, feel free to talk to office staff!

I have other questions regarding my student's registration. Whom should I contact?
Starting Friday, July 29, our building secretaries will be back in the office. Please call us at 674-6917.

I have questions about bus transportation. Whom should I contact?
If you need to find out if you live in our walk zone (where bus transportation is not provided), click here. For other information, including safety information and rules, click here. If you have other questions regarding transportation, contact the Transportation Department at 664-4237.

YOU are invited to the Giant Challenge, coming up Friday through Sunday, July 22-24!


This is a great event that brings alumni back and community members out to support and celebrate the Marion Giants of yesterday, today, and tomorrow! Proceeds support Marion Community Schools athletics and arts programs. It's an event you don't want to miss.

Online registration options are closed at this point, but you can still sign up or buy spectator passes at the gate!
  • Are you an MHS alum who would like to participate in the friendly athletes vs. alumni competitions? You can register at the events! Click here for more information.
  • Do you just want to watch the athletes vs. alumni games? A weekend spectator pass is only $10 per adult! (Students high school and younger get in free.) You can pay at the gate for any event. This pass gets you into any sporting event all weekend. Want to check out the full weekend schedule? Click here. 
  • Are you interested in participating the Giant Pride Run/Walk? Come out to the MHS stadium / track Saturday, July 23! Registration / check-in is from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Race starts at 8:30. Click here to view course details.
  • Do you want to participate in Lights Out Bowling with pro bowler and MHS alum Ronnie Russell? Be at Crest Lanes at 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 22! (MHS alum Sammy Miles will be providing live music that night!)
  • Don't miss the Walton Center Choral Reunion show! (Broadway star and MHS alum Jim Walton will be there, along with dozens of choral alumni. You don't want to miss this!) Buy $10 tickets at the door at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 24 at MHS's Walton Performing Arts Center.

All incoming seventh- and eighth-graders at McCulloch are invited to an informational meeting and first practice for the McCulloch football team this coming Monday, July 25. If you are interested in playing or helping as a team manager, please join us at 4 p.m. Monday, July 25, in the McCulloch gym.

Parents are also invited to this meeting/practice, to get more information about the upcoming season.

We hope all interested students and parents can make it out to this meeting/practice

If you absolutely cannot be there Monday, please attend practice as soon as possible, and speak with Coach Monty Smith. Regular practices will be at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

News Blog Category - News A Marion High School alumna is returning home to take the lead at McCulloch Junior High School.

Melissa Pogue will take over as principal at McCulloch Junior High starting Aug. 1.



Welcome, Principal Pogue!


With her roots in Marion, she is committed to building a foundation for lifelong learning for our students, and to working collaboratively with teachers, staff, families, and community members to pursue continuous improvement.

“I believe relationships are at the heart of learning,” she said. “I will work with both students and staff to set goals and achieve success.”

Pogue most recently served as director of learning for Five-Star Technology Solutions. Prior to that, she served in various leadership roles for the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation, culminating in her role as principal at Edgewood Junior High School, where she earned the title of District 9 Middle School Principal of the Year from the Indiana Association of School Principals. She also has decades of experience in the classroom, and she was named Monroe County Educator of the Year in 2008.

“It is my honor to return to serve the students and staff of Marion Community Schools,” Pogue said.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University, where she also completed the principal’s licensure program.

“Melissa is a positive relationship-builder and has a track record of inspiring student achievement. She is centered on student-friendly-learning, and she is a collaborative leader and team builder,” Marion Community Schools Superintendent Brad Lindsay said. “Melissa is about constructive change, continuous improvement, and innovation in learning. She will provide equity, access, and her very best to all stakeholders of our McCulloch Junior High School community. She is a mission-motivated, proven educator who is excited to come back home to Marion, the land of the Giants!”

Former McCulloch Principal Dawn Morgan has accepted an elementary principal position with Huntington County Community Schools.

News Blog Category - News Marion Community Schools Board of School Trustees will accept applications for a vacant Board position for District III. 

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must have resided in the school corporation for at least one year.
  • Reside in District III (includes Center and Washington townships outside the civil city of Marion but within the boundaries of the Marion Community Schools district - precincts: Center 10, 11, 15, 20, 24, parts of Washington 3 and 4)
Term: Ends December 31, 2016
