McCulloch Junior High School honor choir students had a special opportunity to sing at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday, in celebration of the third annual Indiana Arts Education Day.

At the invitation of Indiana Music Education Association, the group performed in the fourth-floor atrium during a reception. They also had the opportunity to meet State Rep. Melanie Wright, herself an educator, along with State Sen. Andy Zay who represents part of Grant County, and Marion’s very own MHS Class of 1988 alumnus, Sen. Greg Taylor.

Indiana State Senator Andy Zay, who represents part of Grant County, poses for a photo with McCulloch Junior High School inside the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis on Thursday, Feb. 14. The students were invited to perform in the state capitol as part of the third annual Indiana Arts Education Day.

Under the leadership of MJHS choir director Christina Huff, the group included students Kaylin Burke, Emily Fisher, Shaylee Vermilion, Chloe Hawkins, Chloe Phillips, Faith Riggs, Lillia Fisher, Joseph Cheung, Joseph Delgado, and Christian Vermilion.

In addition to their performance, the group was also able to tour the Statehouse. The students were very sharp, remembering dates and quoting facts about Indiana's history while they were on the tour, Huff noted afterward.

“Our social studies teachers would have been proud,” she said.

Art and music education advocacy days take place all over the United States. These displays not only broadcast students talents and capabilities but also help in shining a light on the importance of the arts in education. The event in Indianapolis on Thursday was hosted by the Indiana Art Education Network. The Indiana Music Education Association and Indiana State School Music Association were also represented.

At Marion Community Schools, we believe that music and art education is an essential opportunity that all students should have available. McCulloch Junior High School is recognized by the Indiana State School Music Association as one of the top junior high music programs in the state, having won ISSMA’s top award, the JME Total Department All Music award four years in a row — the only school in the state to do so. In addition, Christina Huff was named the Indiana Music Education Association Teacher of the Year for her outstanding work.

Marion Community Schools and McCulloch Junior High School congratulates these students and their teacher on a job well done!
